FAQ
What is the New Mexico State Committee’s connection to the National Museum of Women in the Arts?
When NMWA founder Wilhelmina Cole Holladay created the museum in 1981, she had a vision that it would be the first museum in the world solely dedicated to championing women through the arts. Once it was established, she wanted to expand its reach. Her idea? Regional committees – each committee would then both raise awareness of NMWA and of their regional women-identifying artists.
Today, there are 16 committees in the United States and 11 worldwide. Each committee uses the strengths of its region to bring awareness to NMWA and to regional artists. Meanwhile, NMWA plays a crucial role in connecting all the committees, clarifying their individual responsibilities, and sharing best practices among them. This support by NMWA elevates all the work being done for women-identifying artists around the world.
About the New Mexico State Committee: In 1997, a group of women in New Mexico took it upon themselves to work with NMWA to establish a new state committee here. Through the years, the New Mexico State Committee of NMWA has grown, evolved, and expanded through offering a wide variety of fascinating events and programs that not only highlight NMWA but also women-identifying artists in New Mexico. What is the “Women to Watch” program?
The National Museum of Women in the Arts signature program, “Women to Watch,” is presented every two to three years and is a dynamic collaboration between the museum and participating national and international outreach committees. Outreach committees throughout the U.S. and around the world work to support the museum’s mission in local communities. For this special exhibition, the committees work with curators in their respective regions to create shortlists of artists working with the subject of the exhibition. From this list, NMWA curators select the final artists whose work is on view in NMWA’s gallery for a month and promoted internationally.

Will the NM State Committee participate in the 2027 “Women to Watch” program?
The Women to Watch program, held every three years by NMWA, allows each committee to nominate an artist for an international exhibition held at the Washington DC museum. While New Mexico has participated in the past, the Board has decided that for the 2027 exhibition, we will instead support and promote the event locally, but not submit an artist, due to the costs and time commitments involved.

Will the NM State Committee produce another Artist Registry Exhibition?
The first Artist Registry Exhibition took place in March 2025 at the prestigious Turner Carroll Gallery on Canyon Road. Currently, the idea to produce another show is under discussion by the Board, and as soon as we have any information, we will make a big announcement, so stay tuned!
Does the NM State Committee have an office or a phone number?
No. Being an all-volunteer non-profit, we each work remotely from our homes; we do not have an office or an office phone. The best way to get in touch with us is by sending an email to: letstalk@newmexicowomeninthearts.org, and a volunteer will respond as quickly as possible.
Do I need to be a member of the NM State Committee to volunteer?
No. If you have time, skills, and passion, you are welcome and encouraged to volunteer!
Do I have to be a woman to get involved?
No. We are an inclusive organization and welcome people from all walks of life to join, volunteer, and/or become members.
How can I support the NM State Committee?
We are a membership organization, which means our operating budget comes from membership fees and donations. The National Museum of Women in the Arts does not financially support us. We deeply appreciate all our members and our donors. It is easy to make a tax-deductible donation through our secure website, and any and all amounts are gratefully accepted! With your support, we can continue growing a vibrant community where women artists are seen, celebrated, and championed.
How do I participate in the Artist Registry?
The Artist Registry is a benefit of membership in the New Mexico State Committee of the National Museum of Women in the Arts. You can participate if you’re an active member, an adult, and a resident of New Mexico (meaning your primary residence is in New Mexico and this is where you vote in elections).
