Statement

I am profoundly drawn to the beauty of landscapes. I aim to capture my experience of the scenery around me through loose, expressive brush strokes. Utilizing the fluidity of watercolors, I immerse myself in the desert, seaside, or forest, painting en plein air to depict the fleeting interplay of light and shadow as it dances across the land and reflects on the water. Each piece invites the viewer to experience the moment as I felt it, where vibrant hues and dynamic strokes evoke emotion and a connection to the landscape.

Bio

Since 2016, Roxy and her husband, Carl, have sailed over 52,000 nautical miles on their catamaran, Sky Pond. They completed their circumnavigation of the Pacific Ocean in 2024. Their journey took them from Vietnam across the Pacific Ocean to Canada and Mexico before concluding in Australia. Roxy and Carl now live in Santa Fe. During her time as a live-aboard sailor, she became a self-taught watercolorist. Despite facing the challenges of isolation, confinement, and difficult ocean passages, she utilized plein-air techniques to capture iconic landscapes. Her paintings reflect their voyages to Mexico, the Marquesas, Fiji, Vanuatu, Australia, New Zealand, and the Tuamotus. She has shared her artwork with Pacific Islanders, and others they have met while traveling the world and offered basic painting and color theory classes to fellow sailors. In December 2024, she was featured in Plein Air Magazine's "Postcards from the Road" for her painting of the village of Malakati, Fiji. In 2024, the Northwest Watercolor Society showcased a four-part series of her work in their newsletter, "Hot Press," titled "Sail Away With Your Brush: Painting Aboard Sky Pond." Roxy is currently writing her memoir, which will feature her paintings alongside her story and nautical charts. These charts indicate the locations where she created each piece during their circumnavigation of the Pacific Ocean. The book is titled "Capturing the Light from Sky Pond—A Voyage of Self-Discovery".
