Pat Pitcher

Nature is at the heart of my artistic practice. My process begins with slowing down and paying attention. I observe birds in flight, reptiles resting in the sun, and the subtle patterns that exist all around us. Through the lens of my camera, I capture these moments as a way of holding onto their energy and presence. Photography is the starting point for my work. In the studio, I combine these images with printmaking techniques such as photogravure, chine collé, and collage. I am drawn to layering because it mirrors how we experience nature—nothing is flat or simple. Patterns, textures, and lines overlap, creating depth and movement. My abstract paintings are not meant to describe nature literally, but to express the power of nature as I see and feel it. I am inspired by moments of strength and motion, like a swan rising from the water or an eagle diving for its meal. Color helps carry this energy, influenced by the bold and natural markings found in birds and reptiles. Art allows me to communicate what I cannot put into words. Through my work, I hope to invite viewers into a shared moment of wonder, connection, and respect for the natural world.

Drawing from the full range of nature’s energy—from moments of calm to the intensity of wildlife and powerful natural forces—Pat creates work that captures movement, structure, and emotion through varied tools and mediums. Her work reflects the textures and rhythms of nature, expressed through abstraction on canvas and within her monotype prints. Over time, her monotypes have evolved to emphasize organic forms found in the natural world, while her abstract paintings have grown in scale, highlighting movement, gesture, and energetic flow. After retiring from a successful career in the travel industry in 2015, Pat devoted herself fully to her lifelong artistic aspirations. She immersed herself in study through books, online resources, and workshops, steadily refining her craft through daily practice and exploration. Her monotypes and mixed media works have been exhibited widely in juried exhibitions and are held in both private and public collections. A native New Mexican, Pat now finds her creative sanctuary in Northern New Mexico.
