Maternal Mitochondria

Statement

Maternal Mitochondria’s artistic practice is generated through collaboration, and our love of working together is reflected in the final artwork. There is often a linking of forms, between ink and poetry, between ready-mades and the land, and the maternal connection across generations. We frequently delve into the philosophies of feminism, ecology, death and personal identity. We enjoy engaging with the community as much as possible, through open workshops and neighborhood installation art. We work in a wide variety of mediums, such as paper art, ink art, collage, book arts, sculpture and video art. We have an ongoing community project in Santa Fe, New Mexico, the “Spirit Houses,” which are small abodes created out of recycled metal, and which hold a rotating cast of poetry written for the site. We also have an ongoing digital collage photography project, “Maternal Mitochondria,” where we photograph each other and others in our maternal line. By passing the camera back and forth, we are able to see with each other’s eyes, a practice which is much like writing renga poetry together.

Bio

The team of Maternal Mitochondria is an unusual creative collaboration: a mother/daughter duo. Miriam Sagan is a writer and Isabel Winson-Sagan is an interdisciplinary artist. Since 2014 they have been working together in venues ranging from the Herekeke studio on Lama Mountain in New Mexico to SIM house in Reykjavik, Iceland. They combine text and the graphic arts in all they do, ranging from photography to installation to video art. The collaboration itself is unique, as is their practice of often combining traditional Japanese suminagashi with contemporary American poetry. Miriam Sagan is the author of over forty books of poetry, memoir, and fiction. She has received the Santa Fe Mayor’s Award for excellence in the arts and a Poetry Gratitude award from New Mexico Literary Arts. She founded and ran the creative writing program at Santa Fe Community College in New Mexico until her retirement in 2016. Born and raised in Santa Fe, Isabel Winson-Sagan holds several degrees, including an A.A. in intermedia fine arts with a certificate in printmaking/book arts from Santa Fe Community College. She shows often in feminist venues, such as the exhibit Feminist Art in the Trump Era at Axle Contemporary in Santa Fe.
