Statement

My creative work is my joy, my anchor and my refuge. Now approaching my ninth decade, producing work that can please the eye, lift the spirit and leave a smile is my primary artistic goal. To leave a visual legacy celebrating nature's beauty that still remains on our fast decaying planet, is my intent. With so much darkness and despair in the world today I want to offer observable reminders that life in its multitude of forms continues to adapt and survive against all odds. Texture, pattern and composition guide my vision. An explosion of color and whimsy infuses my mixed media collages I call my Paintings with Paper that I create on a gel plate, a way of printing without a press, in lieu of a paintbrush. Challenging myself to find new ways of seeing and doing makes the alchemy for me, and ideally the viewer too. " Creativity requires the courage to let go of certainties." ~ Erich Fromm

Bio

Marjo grew up a rebel with many causes on Long Island, New York during the 1960's. Her formal training focused on the social sciences and education. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Human Services and a Master's degree in Adult Learning. Realizing over time her real passion lay with the creative arts, she took a right turn in mid-life to explore and nurture her innate artistic instincts. Teaching herself black & white film printing, she set up shop for ten years as a freelance photographer in Saratoga Springs, NY taking on photo assignments for local and regional publications and concurrently was the production photographer for her community theater, responsible for all headshots, play bills and photo publicity. In 1993 she migrated to New Mexico, exploring painting and monoprinting, which continue to fuel her creative engine. She lives and maintains her studio in Santa Fe, where she's worked, taught and volunteered for over thirty years.
