Statement

In my artistic practice, I begin each piece with graphite, using soft pencils to create random patterns and free-floating lines that serve as a foundation for the artwork. As the piece evolves, I utilize collage and paint to shape masses and define empty spaces, sometimes reducing elements before building them up again. The high desert landscape occasionally infiltrates my imagery, alongside influences from body-watching and the sensations of my own physicality. My current work commences with impulse drawings that gradually coalesce into identifiable imagery. Subsequently, I employ brush and pigment to shape the artwork into an abstract composition of light and color, capturing the essence of fluidity and spontaneity.

Bio

Liz Penniman, a blend of Texan, New Mexican, and Californian, is a multifaceted artist educated in architecture, mathematics, modern Greek and Italian mannerism, and Neo-expressionist painting. Liz embarked on her artistic journey by earning a bachelor's degree in Environmental Design at the University of Colorado. She further honed her craft by studying classical portraiture at The Art Students League of New York, followed by contemporary painting at the San Francisco Art Institute. She has been honored with exhibitions in galleries and spaces in San Francisco, New York, Houston, San Antonio, Austin, and Lake Tahoe. Additionally, she has been granted prestigious residencies at the Vermont Studio Center, the Museum of Contemporary Art Tucson, the HANGAR Artistic Research Center in Lisbon, Portugal, and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. Currently living and working in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Liz continues to captivate audiences with her evocative and dynamic artistry.
