Statement

Some people think or expect that you should make the same kinds of art forever because it creates a convenient narrative. I want my work to embody my inherent contradictions. “The sheer bigness of the world makes me feel lonely to the bone. The world is so huge that people are always getting lost in it. There are too many ideas and things and people, too many directions to go. I believe that the reason it matters to care passionately about something is that it whittles the world down to a more manageable size.” (quote from The Orchid Thief) I work in series after giving myself a theme. My inspiration comes from books, music, and the world around me. I want people to think about what we do to get through our lives, which often present us with many roadblocks. How do we live in this world?

Bio

I was born in Portland Oregon and grew up there and in California and Nevada. After attending the University of Nevada, Reno, and receiving a BA in studio art (painting, photography and sculpture) I worked on an MFA. I have been exhibiting my art since 1976. I returned to New Mexico in April 2022 after leaving New Mexico in 2014 and moving to Nevada and Arizona for those in-between years. I was teaching in the art department at UNR before I left in 1986 for New Mexico. I then taught at the College of Santa Fe in NM and at The Drawing Studio in Tucson, AZ. I taught experimental drawing, painting, mixed media, and photography. I was assistant director at a contemporary gallery in Santa Fe, and I was the Exhibit Director for The Drawing Studio. I have also worked as a graphic designer since 1972 and a researcher for arts for an auction company.
