Statement

I am a woodblock printmaker, oil painter and textile artist. I fell in love with the materials and tools used in traditional Japanese woodblock printmaking (mokuhanga). I feel a strong affinity with the contemplative nature of the Japanese aesthetic, and I am drawn to mokuhanga because of its focus on natural materials. I enjoy the entire mokuhanga process, from carving the blocks, to color mixing, to hand pressing an edition. For me, printmaking is the perfect intersection of right and left-brain thinking. A printmaker must be methodical and detail-oriented, but at the same time, there is so much room for creativity in printmaking. I view my studio practice as an integral part of my spiritual practice as a contemplative Christian. I consider abstraction as the best means for expressing spiritual truths I cannot otherwise articulate. Much of my work relates to the physical landscape.

Bio
