Statement

My current series of loose brushstroke Gouache landscape paintings is titled 100’ From Home and is based on my views approximately 100 feet from my house in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Natural scenery and views provide calm and inspiration, and having access to nature is important for my creative process. I grew up in a flat desert dominated by the oil industry, so views of big skies were punctuated by towering oil rigs. As my husband’s career moved us to many locations in the United States, I found the joy of landscapes so green and lush that it overwhelmed my desert eyes. Ancient mountains and valleys of the Mid-Atlantic were divided by crystal clear streams and rivers. Winding historic roads changed to precise grid-patterned road systems in the Midwest. I observed with distress that many of these views that brought me joy to paint were quickly changing to suburbs and shopping centers. I felt a responsibility to record these views and preserve them in my art. I am working with this uncommon opaque watercolor, gouache, because I became allergic to acrylic paint that I used for decades. The learning curve has been long and interesting but I feel I have mastered gouache in a way that works for these landscapes. After many moves across the United States as an adult, I have found that calming natural places feed my creative spirit as I record some of the United States’ disappearing vistas.

Bio

Judy's first PR came at age 6 at the local TV station of her drawing of the back-end of a pig as it tried to escape down a ground hog hole was featured. At about this time her parents provided private art lessons until she entered high school. After completing a BFA at a large university in Texas. Locations around the United States and scenery began to be very inspiring and important in her artwork, both in graphic design in Mississippi and Illinois, and in fine art paintings shown in galleries in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and New Mexico. In 2008, Judy Eckhart, her husband and her dogs moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico where she found her home among artists and found her inspiration for landscape painting right out the door of her home. Judy Eckhart's paintings are represented by Art.Is.Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
