Hilary Lorenz

Artist Statement: Hilary Lorenz, an interdisciplinary artist, makes large-scale installations of printed and cut paper that revolve around her physical exploration and relationship with the natural world. Lorenz travels extensively to create ambitious local and international projects that draw from her experience and infatuation with frontier living. Lorenz’s art practice, in the broadest sense, revolves around exploration and intersections of running, printmaking, nature, and solitude. She records her perambulations and circulation of ideas and processes through drawing and print. Instilled in every drawn line of a painting or carved stroke in a linoleum block is the direct translation of a particular journey. It is as if she has her own secret record hidden within the image. Images above: The Moth Migration Project founded by visual artist Hilary Lorenz is a crowd-sourced collection of hand-printed, drawn, and cut paper moths exhibited in multi-sensory installations. Choosing moths, a nocturnal pollinator, as the vehicle for cross-pollination and international exchange, the project engages people in both the physical and digital world and is a tool for building communities of diverse cultures, ages, and nationalities. Hilary Lorenz is a print media artist based in New Mexico who creates large-scale printed and cut-paper installations rooted in her physical exploration of the natural world. Her work draws from extensive travel and a long-standing fascination with frontier living. After thirty years in New York City, Lorenz moved to rural New Mexico in fall 2021. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Denver Botanic Garden, CO; Bundaberg and Gympie Regional Galleries, Australia; Sunbury Shores Arts Centre, New Brunswick, Canada; Wave Hill, Bronx, NY; 516Arts, Albuquerque, NM; Bridge Park Commission, Brooklyn, NY; Scuola Internazionale di Grafica, Venice, Italy; Atelier Lacourière et Frélaut, Paris, France; and the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts and Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts, Taiwan. Lorenz’s residencies and awards include TIDES Institute, LMCC Governors Island, Yukon ArtsCentre Chilkoot Trail Residency, ARTS Tasmania, and the Lower East Side Printshop. A Fulbright Scholar and NEA Mid-Atlantic Fellow, her work has been reviewed in The New York Times, Art in America, and Art on Paper. She received her MA and MFA from the University of Iowa.
