Helen Becker

My inspiration lies in the elemental dance of shadows and highlights - how they shape our perception of objects and spaces, conveying depth and form. Lighting profoundly affects our understanding of the environment. I strive to celebrate an often overlooked yet essential aspect of how we see and experience the world. By adjusting values, intensities, spaces and forms, a deeper expression of the three dimensional world is revealed.

Being creative seemed like an attractive necessity while growing up in northeast Ohio. Pencils, crayons, scissors, and glue were tools for every kind of invention and precursors for not only collaging endeavors, but also charcoal drawing. After graduating from a liberal arts college, Helen moved west to experience mountain living. She also discovered the red rocks of Moab, Utah, where she lived for 14 years. While there, she was a founding board member of Gallery Moab and acted as their treasurer. She also, helped organize and conduct Plein Air Moab, an event for artists creating outdoors. Helen's art practice involves creating, attending workshops, receiving mentoring, teaching, reading and journaling. She is a signature member of the National Collage Society and the International Society of Experimental Artists. She has received numerous awards from both organizations. Currently, Helen and her husband, Jim, live in Lamy, New Mexico, with their tabby cat, Lockey. While all three travel in their camper van to locations in the U.S. and Canada, Helen sketches with charcoal and pencil and develops new ideas for collages, never leaving her art practice at home.
