Statement

My artwork is based on landscape imagery with a focus on color and texture. I work in oil and cold wax applying very thin layers to the wood board adding texture, scraping the paint, dissolving and then rebuilding as I construct the painting. This 'surface tension' is transformed into a subtle and peaceful mix of texture with the focus being the depth of the colors. My paintings are a long journey and are often developed in a series based on different elements of the landscape. I want people to connect with my work on an emotional level. I want them to connect with this sense of place that I have created in each painting. My local surroundings and distant trips continue to inspire my artwork. Skies, vast lands, waters, desert, colors, and light also inspire me, and I am thankful for the beauty around me and the ability to transform it into my art. I currently divide my time between Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Door County, Wisconsin.

Bio

Ginnie Cappaert is a full-time visual artist with a studio/gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico and Door County, Wisconsin. Her surroundings of nature and travels inspire and influence the oil, cold wax, and mixed media paintings for which she has become known. She feels compelled to interpret the landscape that surrounds her in an abstract, intuitive and playful manner. Ginnie Cappaert pulls color, texture and abstract forms from the surrounding environments to inform her paintings. Her deeply worked and layered surfaces describe emotional connections to place and space, taking the notion of 'landscape' into a realm that is both magical and familiar. She uses cold wax medium to mix with oil paints creating a more spreadable and textured paint that she can extensively layer, add and remove or unearth to expose 'history' within the painting. This process includes a lot of exploration from deep within and is a constant push-pull with color and texture. Some may call Ginnie a 'colorist' as she naturally explores and emphasizes the color relationships pulled from nature and her imagination. Ginnie owns her own gallery, Cappaert Contemporary Gallery, Door County, Wisconsin and co-owns Materiality, Santa Fe, New Mexico and is represented by seven galleries nationwide. She continually strives to find a balance in her work between abstraction and the landscape.
