Carol Miraben

The power of abstraction has guided my work for many years, as a painter and as a textile artist. Composition, design, color, value, texture…all of the elements of making art apply, no matter what medium is used. The need to trust my instincts, my sense of design and to respond to ‘what if’ are all parts of my creative process. My improvisational pieces are inspired by the materials I use rather than any particular vision. I begin by selecting materials that appeal to me. Those choices frequently change as the piece develops. Textiles have given me the opportunity to think more about surface treatments and new ways of adding texture and interest. I converse with the pieces as I work. These dialogues inform the process throughout. My job is to get out of the way and allow the piece to participate - and in some cases - be in charge of the decisions.

I began painting with watercolors in a semi-realistic style 25 years ago. After about ten years I switched to painting abstractly with acrylics and mixed media. Eight years ago I detoured to working with textiles, and that where I’ve been ever since.
