Statement

I began working with encaustics over 25 years ago at UNM with little information available other than historic references. I had the support of my professors, but I was essentially self taught. My paintings are on boards 24” or 48” square. Some are arranged in diptychs or grids of 4-9 pieces. I create a layering process that gives the piece depth and movement. My work is non representational but I focus on an abstract concept. Early works were called “Atmospheric Amusements” described as landscapes created with color and light, conveying a language of mood and emotion. Some references were to grass, clouds, canyons, sunrises and sunsets of NM. A white series focuses on global warming and references glaciers, slush, water, and snow. White paintings by Malevich and Rauschenberg are favorites of mine and I always wanted to do a white series. I build up the structural layers to portray my intentions and allow the painting to go in its direction. Although these are essentially white, the depth elicits colors that help to describe things such as reflections, melting snow, or blue ice. Recently I started a series that is based on the sky, stars and starlight. These include graphite to emphasize the light and rays projected. I enjoy working in a series to push an idea along and give me a focus to develop. Besides encaustic on boards I do encaustics on paper and cold waxes on linen. I enjoy collage, oils on canvas and linen and book arts. With those I am free to explore.
