Statement

As a sensitive child, I observed or experienced injustice, arrogance, ignorance, intolerance, racism, antisemitism, homophobia, hypocrisy, bullying, and a lack of empathy and appreciation for diversity. I became a wannabe change agent with concerns about how we see and care for one another. I create images ranging from classical nudes to quirky surreal portraits and nature-inspired abstractions that hopefully move viewers in positive ways. In addition to showing in galleries, I also enjoy creating private, public, and corporate commissions. I’ve been inspired by greats like Caravaggio, Goya, Rauschenberg, Viola, Chicago, and so many creative contemporaries. I begin each piece by playing with personal photos or with physical materials. Each beginning becomes either pure painting or mixed media work. I’m a post-visualizer, having little (if any) idea of where I’m going at the outset. I love the mystery of the process and the challenge of discovering new ways of presenting ideas. I work in series (six so far. Their common thread is that they all are intended to strike a humanistic chord about the power and wisdom of our moment-to-moment choices in response to life and to one another. I first moved to Santa Fe in 2003. Santa Fe is my heart’s home. I’m happy to say that I’m back.

Bio

Carol Coates is an American artist who was born in Michigan and earned her Master of Fine Arts at the University of Michigan in drawing, painting, and photography. Her graduate work continued at U of M, MSU, Instituto Allende (San Miguel, Mexico), CMU, and in workshops in Santa Fe, Palm Beach, Anderson Ranch, Pilchuck Glass School, and elsewhere. She studied with JoAnn Leonard, Jerry Uellsman, Michel Tcherevkoff, the Park-Harrisons, Kiki Crebs, and David Kimball Anderson. She was the recipient of two Creative Artist Grant Awards from the Michigan Art Council and ArtServe Michigan and a full scholarship to attend Pilchuck. Selected Commissions/Collections/Representation include Walker Fine Art. Denver, CO, HW Gallery, Naples, FL, Lois Lambert Contemporary, Santa Monica, CA, Tansey Contemporary, Santa Fe, NM, Tadu Contemporary, Santa Fe, NM, Dow Chemical Company World Headquarters, Second National Bank, Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner, and Smith, and NNDOT (NM Arts Purchase Prize). She has received numerous awards here and abroad, has had a long list of solo shows and has been included in national and international group exhibitions. Selected Press include American Art Collector Magazine, Trend Magazine, Art Ltd., Santa Fean, THE Magazine, Bliss Magazine, Santa Fe New Mexican, One Hundred Artists of the Southwest, Santa Fean NOW, Ann Arbor News, Albuquerque Journal, and the Detroit Free Press.
