Statement

My work is inspired by the High Chihuahua Desert. This landscape can often appear inhospitable, yet it is full of weird and wonderful growing things that look delicate from a distance but are tough and wicked up close. The sculptural plants I make are informed by this vegetation that endures and survives despite a harsh climate. I build my pieces blending welded steel with mid-fire stoneware, embracing a metaphor that is about resilience, persistence, toughness, durability, tenacity and adaptability.

Bio

Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. I hold a BFA in sculpture from Michigan State University where I studied metal work of all types and sizes and have an MFA in ceramics from New Mexico State University. Currently I fabricate sculpture for interior spaces as well as larger public work for the outdoors. I combine welded steel with ceramics to create both geometric and organic elements. The ceramic is glazed stoneware and the steel structures are completed with a variety of auto body finishes. I have designed and installed over a dozen public sculptures in New Mexico including the Plaza de Las Cruces, Eastern New Mexico University in Portales as well as Roswell, Bernalillo recreational path on 2nd in Albuquerque, and Las Cruces Amador Health Complex. I exhibit nationally and am included in several permanent collections: The Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, Montana, the New Mexico State Capitol collection, The Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, New Mexico Central Community College, the Albuquerque library system, The Las Cruces Museum of Fine Arts, and the Littleton Fine Arts Museum in Colorado
