Statement

I see us all as beings who interact with one another in twos or threes or in a crowd, yet we are essentially alone. In my work I focus on the figure and try to convey intellectual and emotional states of being through subtle gestures, a turn of the head, a hand outstretched or a body leaning in. There is always a story in my mind when I am sculpting My figures have some environmental context. In the early days these were complex rooms. In time, they morphed into simple geometric shapes. Those shapes are now softening and becoming shapes that hold the figures. Glass has been my chosen medium because of the color and luminosity. It holds the light like a soul. Metal is often a component usually in a supporting role. However, I just completed a series of bronze figures nestled in glass.

Bio

Lucy Lyon was born in Colorado and now lives in Jaconita, New Mexico. In the early 70's she was living and working in New York City. She was doing life drawing at Columbia in the evenings and happened upon a stained glass class at Riverside Church. A bit later she went to a Whitney Museum show of Edward Hopper's work that led to work she does today. When Lucy moved back to the west, she set up a stained glass studio and started showing at crafts fairs. She was able to take workshops with some of the nationally prominent glass artists, Paul Marioni and Narcissus Quagliata. Local artists Flo Perkins and Charlie Miner generously shared their knowledge and experience. Several sessions at Pilchuck Glass School in Washington, led her to concentrate on figurative sculpting and cast glass. Lucys work is in a number of private collections and is also included in museum collections at the Imagine Museum, Florida, Bergstrom Mahler Museum, Wisconsin, and the Wheaton Museum of Glass in New Jersey and several others. Recently the Glasmuseum Lette in Germany acquired a piece.
