Statement

My work is most often personal and about my reactions to culture or situations. They are often narrative and interactive with installations, artist books, and video. The work is constructed from multiple images to create new narratives. Since I have been a working artist for over 50 years, I have created many bodies of work which use media appropriate to the idea I am exploring. I was an early adopter of working digitally which gave me an easier way to make complicated layered images. Working this way, I can play with stories and create new realities. One of my loves is creating artist books filled with images and stories.

Bio

I have been a working artist for over 50 years, teaching photography in higher education. I attended the University of Illinois Chicago and The School of the Art Institute of Chicago for an MFA in photography. I taught at Metropolitan State in Denver for 18 years, and then at Northern Kentucky University just outside of Cincinnati for 23 years. At both schools, I developed courses including analog/digital photography, artist bookmaking, web design, and video. I moved to Las Cruces in 2022 after retiring and being named Professor Emerita in 2015. I am the second of twelve children from a working class Chicago family. My work is in many collections including the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin, the Museum of Photographic Arts, in San Diego, the Denver Art Museum, Arizona State University Northlight Gallery, Light Work, Syracuse University and the Center for Creative Photography University of Arizona Tucson among others. Barbara has received many grants including a National Endowment for the Arts Photographic Survey Grant, an Ohio Arts Council individual artist grant, and Kentucky Foundation for Women grants, among others. I will be one of the photographers featured in Rupert Jenkins' book Outside Influence - History of Photography in Colorado 1955 -1995 which is due out from the University of Colorado Press in April 2026. My legacy is found in the many former students who found their voices and are still working artists throughout the States and Europe.
